Yoga Positions for Beginners

skip to the pose links

Yoga begins with the desire to be free.

Yoga positions for beginners are be positions that help you cultivate a sense of ease in your body. A friend of mine came back from India with these words from her teacher:

"Anytime you are doing conscious movement, you are doing yoga."

Any time? It's a pretty strong statement. I think what he meant was that through a practice of paying attention - mindfulness, we bring awareness to our a kind of higher mind, to being, or our consciousness, or soul, as it pulses in and as our body. This brings a kind of union or yoga, to the inner and outer experiences/aspects of the self.

All of us can practice moving consciously. Conscious movement is mindfulness practice applied to any type of exercise you are already doing, like walking or swimming, even gardening, or doing the dishes. Moving meditation is yoga.

What About the Asanas, or Poses?

The practices specific to hatha yoga, the poses and so on, are an amazing technology for whole body wellness, it's true. But learning yoga postures, even yoga positions for beginners, from from a website, is tricky.

I can't see you like a real live teacher could. I can't tell if you have a misalignment that could possibly lead to injury. It's best to learn physical things in the physical presence of someone who can guide you.

Having said that, I have compiled a list of beginners poses that are pretty accessible to most bodies in good health. Use good judgement, please. You should check in with your doctor first. And you should read a bit about the practice, too - the pages on softening, strengthening, and stretching would be a good start.

And why not check out a class or two?

Well, I'd rather not do yoga poses in public until I'm really good at them.

Oh Yes, that. Everyone feels that way at first. But you don't need to feel nervous when going to your first yoga class - everyone in that room was a beginner once. I realize that sometimes, you look around a yoga class and everyone there seems like an expert already, and they all look perfect and beautiful in their designer clothes. I know, I was there once, too.

And it may well be true. But who cares. Who are you doing yoga for, anyway?

If you are uncomfortable in your yoga class, you might just want to shop around until you find one you like better. There are as many approaches to yoga as there are approaches to, say, cooking. Some are rigorous, and even aerobic, others are more gentle and restorative.

Classes focusing on yoga positions for beginners are also out there. Look for class titles like Gentle Yoga, or Yoga for the Rest of Us.

Or, just stay in the class you're in and practice loving yourself the way you are. Make sure you ask questions, don't be anonymous to your teacher. And if anything hurts - don't do it.

A Prelude to Yoga Positions for Beginners

You Are Divine

All you really need to begin a yoga class is the desire to feel free. Oh, and you'll need some comfortable clothes, and getting a check-up would be good, and a green light from your doctor. Most studios provide yoga mats, either free of charge or for a minimal rental fee ($1 or $2). But you might prefer to have your own.

I would like it if you read the sections on softening, strengthening, and stretching first, too.

But I'm going to give you something extra. It is the first mantra I ever learned from my teacher, John Friend. A mantra is a word or phrase that you repeat to yourself as a form of meditation. Here it is.

"I am worthy, I am divine."

And you are.

Take it with you everywhere you go from now on.
